The Wapi The bird and crocodile imagery In a legend, one of many handed down through the centuries by word of mouth, there being no written language. A long time ago at the beginning of time there was a famine in the village.
Two women canoed out on the lake in search of fish. In the centre of the lake was a tall pole. One of the women climbed onto it to fish and the other paddled a long way off. As the sun went down, she paddled the canoe back to the village leaving her friend stranded.A bird, worn out by flying, perched on her head to rest and the women allowed it to remain. The grateful bird made a plea for her spirit Maselai who descended with the woman to his realm at the bottom of the lake. She gave birth to two eggs which she took back to her village to hatch beside the fire.
One egg hatched a bird and the other a crocodile. The bird child she gave to the forest and the crocodile to the lake so there would be no more famine. From that time on when the lake flooded the crocodile sends fish and her forest child provides food for the village. This is a stunning collectors piece and rare find.
