Old Asmat shields were roughed out with stone tools and then had fine relief detailing added on the top with bone chisels or shell tools. All colours have magical qualities and represent different aspects of the Asmat world, both seen and unseen. This piece has white black and brown colours. The white colour comes from burnt and powdered mussel shells from the coast or, further inland, more likely from kaolin clays.
