Large Sepik Spirit Mask From Papua New Guinea

LARGE DECORATED SPIRIT MASK FROM THE SEPIK REGION OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA. A particularly fine example of it's kind. Elaborately decorated with a wealth of tropical shells of various sizes and types mounted into clay.

Painted with red ochre and black charcoal. Cassowary feathers at the top and long coconut fronds attached to the sides. Several shells missing and particularly on the right cheek a section of clay and shells are no longer present.

Height: 48 cms excluding fronds. Most items were collected by ourselves while we were living and working in Papua New Guinea in the 1980's. We are now downsizing from our large old farmhouse to something more manageable for our age. Some carvings have signs of wear and tear due to age. Some have cracking which occurs as a result of taking items from the tropics to a colder, drier environment.
