19th Century Papua New Guinea headdress, likely Central Coast and worn by woman
19th century Papua New Guinea feather headdress. This headdress may be from the Koitabu or the Mafulu people of the Central Province, Papua New Guinea, most likely used by a woman, as I found some similar ones in the British Museum website. There is also a lesser possibility that this is from the Marquesas Islands, as I found some 19th century drawings where the women wore similar headdresses. Materials: Vegetable fiber, feathers, string.

This is held up with a museum quality custom-made black metal stand. Provenance: property from an estate with an important collection of Oceanic art and ethnography, Somis (Ventura County) California. Weight: 1 lb 5 oz. Measurements: from base of stand to end of feathers: 18 inches, from base to head band: 10 inches, width: 7 inches, depth: 2 3/4 inches. You can see the age of the fiber as well as the feathers.
