Description: A beautiful large old stone axe/adze collected by Kenneth Hamish Macgowan in Papua New Guinea in the early 1960s. Macgowan was the transport man and field assistant on the Seventh Archbold Expedition to New Guinea in 1964. This axe has a very old encrusted patina.

Measurements: Length 25.5 cm, Width 7 cm, Thick 2.5 cm. Condition: Good condition please check the photos. I collected these over several years of advertising for tribal artefacts in NSW & QLD.

I saw many collections of New Guinea art in my travels, but I always kept aside stone pieces that took my fancy. These stones came from Patrol Officers, early field collectors and Australian expats in New Guinea prior to Independence.

Many of these stones were excavated from airfields and gardens all are old, but some are prehistoric. I guarantee the provenance and age on all these stone items. 7th Archbold Expedition Papua New Guinea Encrusted Old Stone Trade Axe Adze 18. It may have been used as a ritual/magic stone.
