DESCRIPTION Antique stone axe (Hoi) made and used by the native people of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. Heavy stone head attached to long slightly bent handle with wooden head via woven beaten reeds. Primitive in construction with a substantial weight this is a rare stone club from New Guinea. This was part of a collection from the estate of Dr Dan Shaw, CA. Dan Shaw, an American missionary-linguist-anthropologist affiliated with both the APCM and the Summer Institute of Linguistics.

Dr Dan Shaw and his family lived with the Samo from 1970 until 1982, learned their language and did translation work. A great rare piece of functional documentation of Papua New Guinea history.

MEASUREMENTS Club measures 17.5" long by 2.5" deep by 13.25 wide and weighs 2lb 5oz. The stone head measures just over 4 long. CONDITION In nice condition with some signs of use commensurate with age (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
