The yena figure is associated with the first ceremony organized to celebrate the harvest of the yam (cycle of three ceremonies in all), sacred and revered tuber throughout Melanesia. This sculpture symbolizes the planting period and evokes the tuber as well as the stick to be used for its transplantation.These traditions are still strong in the region of the Waskuk hills.
