Please note: These specimens are created for retail display purposes rather than for collectors. Most of the framed items are glued to the base and may have minor repairs. Coscinocera hercules male, the hercules moth, Papua New Guinea silk moth, entomology present, nature art, taxidermy moth, A4 Coscinocera hercules, commonly known as the Hercules moth, is one of the largest moth species in the world, native to the rainforests of northern Australia and New Guinea. Males have distinctively large, elongated tails on their hindwings, while females are generally larger in wingspan, reaching up to 27 cm (10.6 inches). Their wings display a stunning pattern of translucent "windows" and brown, tan, and cream hues that provide effective camouflage against tree bark.

Despite their impressive size, Hercules moths do not have functional mouthparts in their adult stage, meaning they cannot feed and rely solely on energy reserves accumulated during their caterpillar phase. The caterpillar of the Hercules moth is equally remarkable, growing up to 12 cm (4.7 inches) long and featuring a pale green, spiny body.

These larvae feed voraciously on the leaves of various rainforest trees, including the bleeding heart tree (Homalanthus novoguineensis). After pupating within a silk cocoon, the adult emerges with the sole purpose of reproducing before its short lifespan-typically less than two weeks-comes to an end.

The Hercules moth is a nocturnal species, using its large wings to glide through the rainforest in search of mates, making it a fascinating example of the beauty and uniqueness found in the insect world. We firmly support the sustainable tropical butterfly collections as long as they take care of the conservation of the rainforest where they fly and the development of responsible conscious trading.

This allows us to support local ranching farms with ethically sourced material and help at the same time collectors and enthusiasts to contribute to understanding and treasuring those species. Please take into consideration that the specimen that you will receive may slightly differ in size, shape or colour from the picture shown as you are purchasing a natural product. Please note: In our selection of white frames, the inner box frame-the part that creates the depth of the shadow box-is currently only available in black, as white versions are not available at this time.

The outer frame remains white. This detail has not been an issue in over six years of offering this product, but we wanted to proactively inform you to ensure full transparency. This applies only to deep frame items. Shadow boxes, if selected, come with a white inner frame.
