Iatmul wood figure, Sepik Region. Papua New Guinea tribal ancestral art

Exquisite, authoritative and powerful old ancestral figure that stands 30 inches tall. It has an imposing face that is interesting and carved with perfect ancestral lines and motives that empower the the unique figure.

The large face is well appointed with angular well defined and strong lines that signify an important and favourable ancestor that was highly respected and valued by the community. It is painted with charcoal, ash and mud which are the traditional natural paints, it is adorned with emu feathers and "ass grass" that covers its front and the arms and legs have woven bark string tied to complete the tribal cultural look. Skilfully carved in the unique and traditional style.

Tribal art of the ancestors that has significant cultural relevance and carved to pay respect and in memory of ancestors for the family & communities protection. The piece is in very good condition, it does have some wear commensurate with age. Some of the emu feathers are worn. It is a beautiful old genuine Papua New Guinean wooden figure from the Sepik Region.
