Mask costumes and figures with a cane framework, covered with a basket wickerwork or bark cloth (tapa) are central to many Papua Gulf ceremonies. Papuan Gulf longhouses share the elongated cone or bisected cone construction of th figures and masks. Bought from a tribal art dealer in Port Moresby in 1987.
Depth of Mask: 35 cms. Length of skirt 80 cms. Weight (unpacked): 1.2 kilos. Most items were collected by ourselves while we were living and working in Papua New Guinea in the 1980's. We are now downsizing from our large old farmhouse to something more manageable for our age. Some carvings have signs of wear and tear due to age. Some have cracking which occurs as a result of taking items from the tropics to a colder, drier environment. Please take a look at our other items from Africa, India, Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya, Bali and Burma.
