Large Demon Spirit Man/Crocodile Ritual Totem, Sepik, Papua New Guinea, Oceanic

To see more fine oceanic artefacts. Field collected, this a large old tribal used ritual carved demon spirit figure depicting a half man half crocodile from Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River area.

This piece would have bee used to ward off evil spirits and summons ancestor. This is a rare carving and shows sign of tribal use, particularly on the face. Deep incised lines cover both side of the face of this spirit figure with crocodile headdress covered in heavy ochres.

A superb museum quality piece. Pre post weight 1.4 kg.
