This Large, Rare and Old Heavily and Deeply Carved multifaceted Ceremonial Ramu River area "Battle Shield" is, in my opinion masterfully carved, prior to the wedding held in a local village abutting the river to celebrate the union of a much loved Australian Nurse to her new spouse. The piece stands 57inches / 147cms high and 9inches / roughly 23cn in width / at its widest point of measure. This does not account for the elaborate fibre fringe running down one side of the shield or the depth of the piece. It is an unusual piece, deeply carved out of a relatively light wood, beautifully carved with great care. I suspect that it was treated as a dance shield and no way was a practical battle shield, but it exhibits great craftmanship, a liberal sense of quite superb traditional ascetics, coupled with with the keen eye of an obviously highly gifted artist / carver who was proficient in his craft. Inspection is welcome by prior arrangement, and personal collection from Turramurra, Sydney is also welcomed by prior arrangement. We do our best to describe an object to the best of our abilities. I have been collecting and trading Oceanic material since the early 1980's and cofounded the Oceanic Society of Sydney with a number of other friends and associates in the early 1980's, after an epiphany whilst deeply engaged in a conservation with Chris Boylan, during one of my "rants in the day". The Society still exists and has become an institution in its own right.
