


Lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. This simple but strong mask is made from the breast bone of a cassowary. The cassowary is a strong and feared animal in the jungle, hence the use of this bone as a powerful mask. Sometimes there are woven cane surrounds with cassowary feathers.
Related to rituals of warfare and hunting. The cassowary is considered a very strong and aggressive creature, and its power is sought in tribal fighting.Size: 15 cm (length) 13 cm (width) 5.5 cm (depth).
