L'esprit Parak est lié aux cérémonies d'initiation ainsi qu'à la chasse. Il est supposé aider le chasseur à débusquer le gibier. La région d'origine de ce type de masque se situe dans les terres Mambe, mais cette forme typique a néanmoins été retrouvée tout au long de la côte nord de la Papuasie Nouvelle Guinée, depuis l'embouchure du sépik jusqu'à l'ouest, dans les régions orientales de l'île Kairiru.
