Field collected, this is a Karahut from the Abelam district in the Maprik Region, Papua New Guinea. The karahut is an elongated body ornament woven from handmade bush string and painted.

It is has shells and the base decorated with boars tusks at the top. They are anthropomorphic in shape with a face, boars tusks and two tapering legs finishing with cowrie shell feet. Karahuts were primarily used as war charms and clenched between the teeth while attacking, giving the wearer a fearsome, tusked appearance as well as spiritual protection.

Karahuts are also clenched between the teeth in ceremonial occasions such as initiations when the participants may be extremely attractive to evil spirits since the karahut seals the mouth and prevents the evil spirit entering the body. They have also been used to decorate yams in place of the more familiar woven cane and wooden yam masks. Pre post weight 0.2 kg.
