Old Papua New Guinea Coconut Shell Basket Container -Vintage Tribal Folk Art PNG
Presenting a compelling and genuinely old anthropomorphic container carved from a single solid coconut shell, most likely originating from Papua New Guinea. This is a striking piece of Oceanic folk art, rich in surface patina and cultural presence, and far removed from later tourist or decorative souvenir wares. The maker has cleverly utilised the coconut's natural "eyes" to form a face, further enhanced with inserted shell elements (possibly Cowrie) for the eyes and mouth, giving the object a distinctly expressive, mask-like character. Bordering the edges of the basket is a carefully executed carved dot border, originally infilled with white pigment, traces of which remain visible today and add to the object's aged and authentic appearance. Construction is entirely hand-worked and utilitarian in nature. The face on the front of the coconut is secured with a simple metal plate at the rear, held by a single threaded nut and bolt. The stand, also formed from coconut shell, is attached using strap metal and a bolt, with old beeswax or natural resin used as both adhesive and filler. These materials and construction methods are entirely consistent with early to mid-20th century village-made objects from Papua New Guinea. Objects of this type are sometimes associated with anthropomorphic containers, spirit bowls, or protective charm vessels.

Similar examples are often attributed to the Elema region of the Papuan Gulf, where coconut shell objects of anthropomorphic form were traditionally used as protective charms or in sorcery-related practices, known locally as'marupai'. While a precise tribal attribution is difficult, the form, materials, and construction are well aligned with documented Papuan Gulf traditions. This is a visually strong, honest piece with age, wear, and character that collectors of Oceanic and ethnographic material actively seek. Size & Weight Height: 14 cm Length: 12.5 cm Width: 12.3 cm Weight: 216 grams.

Condition Presented in excellent condition for its age. There is some surface wear, losses to the applied pigment and natural irregularities throughout, making this piece superb! The piece has taken on a genuine and stunning deep patina that really shows its incredibly primitive nature! Structurally sound and displays exceptionally well. A rare and evocative Papua New Guinea coconut shell anthropomorphic container with strong presence and authenticity.

An excellent addition to any high quality Oceanic, tribal, or ethnographic collection. Please message me if you have any questions or need assistance.
