Papua New Guinea, Abelam, Karahut (mid 20th)

A wonderful old Abelam tribe warrior's Karahut. What makes this piece rarer than most is that it has a wooden sculpture head with an ancestor's face.

The basketry fat body contains magic herbs. This would hang from the warrior's neck during sacred ceremonies. Measurements: 25 inches long; 9.5 inches wide (tooth to tooth).
