This is a Rare and Unique Phallocrypt (penis cover) from the Baining Culture, New Britain, Papua New Guinea. This unusual style of phallocrypt is thoroughly modern in look while at the same time being very spiritual. Made by stretching bark cloth over a rattan and gathered in the back, then attached to a long length of bark cloth that is wrapped around the body. Probably used for festivals rather than day to day, due to the fragile nature of the design.
In this particular phallocrypt the bark cloth has been worn and blackened on the edges and perhaps danced in the Baining fire dance. A phallocrypt is an ornament crafted to cover the male genitalia. Among a number of ancient and modern people throughout the Oceanic world, Africa, and many parts of the Americas, it was (and still is in some places) a common form of male ornamentation. This is rare and hard to find Baining Sheath, but would be a wonderful addition to your collection.COMES ON STAND Mid 20th Century This sheath shows age and use, blackened and frayed on the sash, but overall in good condition.
