This is a fabulous old Canoe Splash Board carved by the Massim people in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea. The board is carved out of dense wood and the top of the splash board shows traditional abstract and geometric designs accentuated with Red and Black trade paint.
Many Massim live along the coast thus the art they create is largely connected with boating. Canoe splash board carvings of this kind were traditionally mounted transverse to the hull. They represented one of the most important elements of the canoe for they were believed to provide special protection. This is a beautiful canoe splash board that shows wear and use by the weathered paint and extensive use.
This would be a lovely addition to your home or collection. This splash board is heavy.
