This is such a Unique Hand Carved and Painted Wood Savi Mask from the Tribal People of the Korogo Village, Papua New Guinea. In Papua New Guinea it is only men who wear masks and they must have been initiated into the cult that produces the mask. Masks are hidden from women when not in use and are secret. Representing a god of power, this style of "Savi" was hand carved and hand painted with natural pigments and represents a continuing tradition.
The shell eyes, patterning and mouth are distinctive to this area. Korogo carvers create very specific masks out of solid pieces of wood. This Mask is so unique and would be a compliment to your collection or home.
