For sale is this recently discovered, from the estate of a Harvard University professor's estate in Cambridge, Massachusetts, early to mid 20th century Papua New Guinea, Mwai, Tambanum, vintage powerful ancestor spirit, hand carved and hand painted with plant based chalky paint, wooden board mask. It's nearly undamaged, with only some minor paint loss on the figure's large, protruding nose and even slighter instances of paint loss which occur on the upper and lower wood margins of the figurative wooden sculpture. It's entirely hand carved from a single wooden board, with its characteristic stylized human features and compelling, limited color palette of matte, dry, chalky sepia brown, burnt sienna, putty white, charcoal black and cream plant based colors. The wooden figurative sculpture is free from noticeable edge flea-bites, fractures or repairs and in-painting old or new. It's referred to as a Mwai powerful ancestor mask, seen as bestowing protective strength and good fortune. Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.
