This is a beautiful Old Red Plant Fiber "Fofona"and Gold Lip Shell Pectoral or Necklace from the Kamon People of Papua new Guinea. A Gold Lip ShellFofona' Pectoral were woven by women and given to young men after their initiation. They were worn on the chest and also held induring battle. The shells had great value, once traded all over the world as currency. The Dog Teeth were also used as a form of currency or buyinga bride and also a sign of wealth and prestige, and were worn by initiated men of status in the village.

The large Gold Lip Pearl Shell is the most common wealth item in Papua New Guinea. In the past, special pearl shells were given names and tally ropes were attached to maintain a record of each time the shell was traded.
