This is a Vintage and Very Unique Abalone and Bone Fishing Hook from the Siassi Island, Huon Gulf, Papua New Guinea. This finishing hook is carved from shell and the stem is bone.
The shell hook is attached to the bone with natural fiber. The hook is carved to a point with serrated edges near the top.
The humble fish hook derives its form from its function: to catch fish. But in cultures where fishing is central to the way of life, the crafting of fish hooks is elevated to a form of art. This is a beautifully made fish hook and would be a wonderful addition to your collection.
