Papua New Guinea Trobian Islands carved wood Massim Culture Ceremonial Club. When warfare was discouraged by the early European administrators and missionaries around the turn of the century, the display function of weapons became predominant. These sword club were made from either black ebony or palm wood. They all had intricate designs which were often highlighted by lime infill. These clubs were collected in the late 1940's-early 50's.
