SIRIPIYA PECTORAL ORNAMENT FROM THE EASTERN HIGHLANDS OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA. A particularly fine example of it's kind. Originates from the Bena Bena people of the eastern Highlands.

These are held in the teeth by tribal elders during battles with rival tribes. It is woven from fibre held by a wooden crosspiece. It has two large white cowrie shells and a wealth of small toea shells. Traces of red and yellow pigments.

Most items were collected by ourselves while we were living and working in Papua New Guinea in the 1980's. We are now downsizing from our large old farmhouse to something more manageable for our age. Some carvings have signs of wear and tear due to age.

Some have cracking which occurs as a result of taking items from the tropics to a colder, drier environment.
