Chaque poteau ou poutre est sculpté par un des clans du village qui y représente ses ancêtres et animaux totémiques. Ici une tête de crocodile en partie haute. House post coming from middle Sepik area in Papua New Guinea.
This post was part of the structure of a ceremonial house. This hard wood sculpture is an exceptional piece. The ceremonial houses are regularly rebuilt.
Poles, which are stronger than the light materials that make up the roof, walls and floors, can be reused. However, in case these "haustambaran" are definitively abandoned, it is possible to acquire them, which I did for this specimen. Each post or beam is carved by one of the clans of the village who represents its ancestors and totemic animals.
