To see more fine oceanic artefacts. This is a very large. Beautiful, fine vintage carved Tambanum Spirit House Mask from the Angoram people of Papua New Guinea. This stunning vintage mask has a nice organic form with a bold striking painted design and grass for hair. The mask is absolutely stunning.
The piece has been flame dried over a fire showcasing its early origins. The piece was field collected in the Angoram region and the estimated age of the piece is 1980s. These types of masks are carved from hard wood and are decorated with paint made from natural pigments and charcoal. Ancestor worship was fundamental to the Angoram people, and they believed that ancestral spirits have power over those still living. In addition to ancestral spirits, the Anogram believed in marsalai , or spirits (usually evil ones), that were never human and also affected the realm of the living. In Papua New Guinea it is only men who wear masks and they must have been initiated into the cult that produces the mask. Masks are hidden from women when not in use and are secret. When worn the initiate becomes the spirit / tumbuwan the mask represents.
