To see more fine oceanic artefacts. This is a stunning rare old male spirit figure from the Sawos people in the East Sepik province.

The bent shoulders and overall posture suggest a prestigious tribal chief. Encrusted patina with natural earth painted pigment. Very hard to find piece and beautifully carved. Sawos sculpture is very similar to Iatmul sculpture.

The Sawos have a close relationship with the Iatmul and share many cultural aspects. The Sawos live just north of the Iatmul in the grasslands away from the Sepiks floodplain. The Sawos are among the most skillfully carved examples of primitive art.

This is a stunning collectors piece. The figure has an age crack on the back but does not affect the piece in anyway. Pre post weight 0.950 kg. This is not always possible given the sizes and unique packing requirements for each unique piece.
