Carved spirit mask from the Sepik region. The carving features three faces. One way up the smiling face of the mask under the nose, has large round tropical shell eyes. Turned the other way up there is a stern face at the bottom, and the head of a pelican at the top, both have cowrie shell eyes. Pelicans are powerful headhunting symbols. The mask is not for wearing, it is flat on the back for hanging in the spirit house. Authentic old patina with obvious signs of age.

The mask has been painted with black charcoal and has a slight sheen. Most items were collected by ourselves while we were living and working in Papua New Guinea in the 1980's.

We are now downsizing from our large old farmhouse to something more manageable for our age. Some carvings have signs of wear and tear due to age. Some have cracking which occurs as a result of taking items from the tropics to a colder, drier environment.
