SMOKING PIPES, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea
Southern Highlands smoking pipes from Papua New Guinea are distinctive bamboo objects known for their carved and burnt geometric designs. Many, especially from the Mendi Valley, are shaped like the spiny anteater, with an elongated snout that links them to long-standing regional artistic traditions. Traditionally associated with men's ceremonial life, the bamboo shafts are often decorated with incised patterns, abstract motifs, or spirit faces. Size: 45 cm (height with stand).
