This Dani chest ornament comes from the estate of a world traveler. It is an older piece and it is in excellent condition. The Wopok (also known as Walimo), is a traditional ceremonial chest ornament, or breastplate, from the Dani people of the Baliem Valley in the Central Highlands of West Papua, Indonesia.

This piece is made of sliced and polished nassa shells which are evenly stitched onto plaited plant fiber. Wopok are worn over the sternum as a protective shield for warfare and as spiritual defense against malevolent spirits. It is a powerful symbol of social standing, worn by men of high status and warrior. The shells in this piece are also traditionally used for currency throughout Papua New Guinea and West Papua; so the wearing of this ornament is an impressive display of wealth.
