Authentic mid-century gold-lipped pearl oyster shell pectoral on natural Job's Tears seed strands (24" total length, shell 7" x 6.5). Up for sale is an authentic vintage Kina shell ceremonial necklace from the Highlands region of Papua New Guinea, dating to the mid-to-late 20th century. Historically used as a vital form of tribal currency, prestige asset, and bride price item during ceremonial Moka wealth exchanges, this necklace is a beautiful piece of Pacific Island history. The large central crescent pectoral measures 7 inches wide by 6.5 inches high and is hand-carved from a single pearl oyster shell (Pinctada maxima), showcasing a brilliant natural yellow-gold iridescence and high luster. The edges are detailed with traditional red ochre mineral pigment accents. The shell is securely mounted on a 24-inch double-loop collar beautifully woven from natural grey, tan, and cream Job's Tears grass seeds (Coix lacryma-jobi). The piece is in excellent vintage condition with no chips or hairline cracks, and the natural growth patterns are fully visible on the unpolished back.
