Vintage Papua New Guinea Sepik River Warrior Holding Trophy Head Monumental
A striking and exceptionally scarce vintage Sepik River hardwood sculpture depicting a victorious warrior presenting the severed trophy head of a defeated opponent-an unusually complex narrative composition seldom encountered on the market. Expertly hand carved from a single substantial timber with outstanding aged patina, traditional fibre adornments, boar tusk-style facial ornaments and ceremonial body scarification. Powerful tribal artistry reflecting the rich artistic traditions of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea.

A highly decorative, museum-quality ethnographic statement piece of remarkable presence and collector appeal. Offered is an exceptional vintage hand-carved hardwood figure originating from the renowned Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, one of the world's most celebrated centres of tribal art. Standing an impressive 59cm high and 32cm wide, this powerful sculpture depicts a victorious warrior reverently holding the severed head of his defeated adversary. While individual ancestor figures are relatively common, narrative carvings portraying acts of warfare or trophy-head symbolism are considerably scarcer, making this an especially desirable composition for collectors of Oceanic and ethnographic art.

The sculptor has masterfully balanced elongated proportions with expressive carving, producing a work that is both sculptural and symbolic. The warrior's extended arms cradle the trophy head with remarkable sensitivity, creating a dramatic visual narrative rarely encountered in commercial carvings. Carved from a dense tropical hardwood, the sculpture displays a rich, naturally developed patina accumulated over decades. Traditional white pigment highlights the facial features and ceremonial scarification, while dark pigment enhances the expressive eyes and mouth.

Hand-plaited natural fibre armlets, waist adornments and fibre tail remain intact, complementing the boar tusk-style facial ornaments that are characteristic of ceremonial prestige throughout the Sepik region. The underside reveals authentic hand-tool workmanship, and the entire sculpture exhibits honest age-related wear consistent with a genuine vintage village carving. Minor shrinkage, small age cracks and natural surface wear only enhance its authenticity and character. Whether displayed in a private collection, gallery or sophisticated interior, this impressive sculpture commands immediate attention and represents an increasingly difficult category of Oceanic art to source. Very good vintage condition with attractive age patina, minor age-related shrinkage and wear consistent with age and traditional use. Fibre adornments remain present and contribute to the sculpture's authenticity and visual appeal. A superb collector's example from one of the world's most important traditions of tribal sculpture. And IT'S JUST COOL!
