YIPWON FIGURE FROM THE SEPIK RIVER REGION OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Slightly to the west, near the source of the Blackwater River, is the Yiman and Alamblak area whose famous yipwon figures appeared on the art market in the early sixties.

These tall, highly stylized human representations caught the eye of artists and collectors. They are viewed as two dimensional figures, yet carved in 3D.

The body consists of a series of large semi-symmetrical and opposed hook shapes, together with a imposing head and single leg. Yipwon are war and hunting spirits.
